Five Reasons I'm Not Buying a Wii
Posted on September 25, 2006 by Sure, the Wii looks like it’ll be the run away winner of the Next-Gen consoles; with Microsoft selling a total of around 3 Xbox 360s in Japan and Sony making you choose between it’s latest console and your first car. Despite all this, I won’t be helping Nintendo win this battle. So with my unending ingenuity (almost paralleling Sony with their stunning announcement of naming their new console the PlayStation 3...genius), I made a list of why I shall not buy a Wii.
5. I never want to have this conversation:
Friend: What are you doing?
Kevin: I’m going to go get a Wii.
Friend: You mean you’re going to go take a wee…
Kevin: No. Get.
Friend: So…you like to be urinated on now?
Ok, so maybe it wouldn’t happen exactly like that, but in all seriousness it just doesn’t have the same vibe to it as the others. I think I’ve said more than a few times “Hey, you want to come over, play some PS2?” and I just don’t like the sound of it if I have Wii in there instead, and I know many who feel the same.
4. Nintendo.
If I don’t buy one I’m not jumping on the Wii bandwagon. Nintendo has always had a large number of ‘fanboys’ surrounding them, and it’s just tiring. Brand loyalty with Nintendo is almost equivalent to religion. People who (virtually) baselessly defend something as vehemently as the Wii has been defended in these past few months are annoying. Plain and simple; it irritates me. Just because you love something doesn’t mean everyone has to. And feel free to call me any of the consortium of insults I shall undoubtedly be called for my opinion. I would be surprised if some of them created a proper response to this article.
To be fair, this doesn’t simply apply to Nintendo of course - it is quickly becoming a cornerstone of the gaming industry, with Zelda, Final Fantasy, Halo, and Metal Gear not even having to put out a quality game to sell millions of copies. Nintendo don't have the best track record in recent years, with their last two home consoles essentially proving to be a failure, despite having some of the best if not the best games of that generation on them - which is even more worrying. I just wonder if Nintendo are better with handhelds and have lost their touch with home consoles. I'm not a fanboy - they'll need to prove it to me before I buy a Wii. This just adds an extra little reason why I’m not buying the Wii.
3. Graphics.
I’ve always thought of graphics as an overemphasized part of gaming; yeah it’s nice when everything’s life-like, but it’s not something that makes or breaks game. Recently though, my opinion has been changing: if I couldn’t see Yuna’s expression, see her tears fall into the Macalania Spring, would I even remember that scene?
And so much to my own dismay, I have decided graphics are important to me, and the Wii won’t be excelling in this field. I’ve seen shots of Twilight Princess, and the graphics of the Wii are clearly nothing to scoff at, but the capabilities of the console do not match the 360 or PlayStation 3. If I want a truly immersive console experience in terms of what I'm looking at, I won't find it with the Wii.
2. The Wiimote.
Yeah, you can make it sound like a good idea: it’s a new design leading to a new way to play games, but really it should just be a small addition to some games. I wouldn’t mind trying the Wii Remote out, it really does look like an interesting idea, but I don’t want to be stuck holding onto a stick the whole time I’m playing. I like a nice sturdy controller to play with, one that I can grab a good hold of with both hands and that’s comfortable to hold.
I’ve played a lot of NES in the past, you know the one with the controller that leaves your hands aching when you put it down; turn the Wii mote sideways and looks just like it, not too appealing to me. I don’t want to have to ice my hands after I play a game for twenty minutes.
“But it’s motion sensing, so it’s awesome!” right? The motion part of it is definitely cool - maybe for parties - but when I’m playing video games I’m lying in bed being almost as lazy as humanly possible. I DO NOT want to be working up a sweat when I’m playing a game. I do not want to have to be swinging the damn ergonomic disaster around my room to try and get Link to kill a Tektite.
1. Games.
What else could be number one?
I’m here writing this article for a site devoted to RPGs, so as you can guess, good RPGs is a console’s selling point for me. So let’s just go through what RPGs we know are going to be on the Wii……ok well that was fun.
Honestly now, let’s think about it: Zelda, a game that I’m sure will be magnificent and has the possibility of going down as the one of the greatest games of all time. This is a game I would like to play, but although we do cover it here at RPGSite, it isn’t a true RPG (in my closed, self-righteous mind at least). So yes, I’m sure it will be a great game, but for it’s not and one that I would enjoy, but I love RPGs and to me Zelda isn’t an RPG.
There'll also been Fire Emblem, Pokemon and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers on the RPG front.... but Crystal Chronicles was in my opinion the worst installment of Final Fantasy in the last 19 years. A game I think will be mediocre at best is certainly not going to make me run out and buy its console.
Next we have Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors which, from what I’ve heard, will be ruined my the Wii Remote. Again it comes back to me lying in bed and being lazy. There are going to maybe 1000 battles in the game (and I think that’s a very steep underestimate), and for everyone of those battles I have to swing this remote around? Not my taste at least.
Harvest Moon, Fire Emblem, and Sword of Legendia may prove to be decent games, but I’m not banking a console on them.
Even if I don’t look at the Wii from an RPG-lover perspective though, I still have trouble seeing why I, a 19 year old, would be scrambling for it. Much like the Game Cube the Wii appears to have a tendency towards younger gamers; Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, Sonic and the Secret Rings, SpongeBob Squarepants: Creature from the Krusty Krab, Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz, and the list just goes on and on. I’m not closed minded enough to think that there are no games being made for the older gamers: Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Double Agent, Far Cry Vengeance to name a couple. RPGs aren’t all I play, I do enjoy stealth games, but why go for Splinter Cell, when I could have Metal Gear? Far Cry looks enjoyable, but trumped by Halo.
Nintendo’s showing for games looks wholly unimpressive and unappetizing to me.
Now admittedly I wasn’t all that serious through many of these points, but my last point is the key and why would I buy a system if it’s not going to have any games I want? The answer of course, is simple: I wouldn’t, and I won’t. You may have noticed I over-used the word ‘but’ and that’s the whole point; sure the Wii isn’t terrible by any means, BUT there it never really seems to excel either. It doesn't seem like it's made for somebody like me. The Wii may truly blow Sony and Microsoft away, but it won’t be any thanks to me.

Now, does this mean I agree with him? No. The Wii's games can actually be fun, I like the way the remote works, and the graphics aren't that bad. I find it funny he dislikes the Wii for the very thing that makes it awsome-the Wiimote. I don't feel angry because he stated his opinion (though his tone seems ever-so-slightly immature), but I do disagree with it.
Nintendo Fangirl (lol)
rock on wii
The people at nintendo deserve a lesson. The games for the wii all suck!!!! resident evil 5 will be out on th ps3 and xbox360. Their also making another sucky version for the wii. I think we as the wii lovers are pathetic and should take action.
Real Gamers play Games, Not Consoles.....
I have a pc for hardcore sims. and a nintendo console for fun. I refuse to buy xbox, sorry i will not fund microsoft. and i've always got bored really quickly with playstation games.
As previously said on this forum, if you don't buy a console because of what other people might think, you're pathetic. Personally I like true Nintendo games and franschises like Zelda, Mario and, yes, even Pokemon, other people don't and thats fine, but don't go say they're just for kids. Graphics are overrated, it's true. If graphics realy where so important in games, how come the DS outsells the PSP? You also mention the Wii-mote as a negative thing, but you forget that you don't have to wave your arms all around the room you can just flick with your wrist.
The only thing I agree on is that games sell a system, but different people like diffent games.
I like RPG's and I was kinda dissapointed about the lack of RPG's on Nintendo's previous consoles, but there are some RPG's anounced for the Wii, and I'm sure more will follow.
Now, about all the freaking fanboys. Say something usefull, or don't say anything at all. That accounts for both Nintendo and Sony fanboys.
You are suggesting that fanboys on the internet learn basic grammar school English concepts. however, you forget the main point - they are on the internet. Hope for them as fanboys to learn any sort of installment of the English language is a dream so farfetched that, have them twenty years, they would still not write in coherant sentences.
That being said, these comments are disgusting. Unfortunately, Spongebob is a selling point. Kids like to run around, and they like to run around and be Spongebob at the same time. There are quite a few children on this earth, so doubtless the Wii's price and attractiveness to children will make the Wii the major console. however, titles like Red Steel and Twilight Princess will appeal to an older generation just jumping into the action as well as the legacy players.
It has the potential to be a console for everyone. Will it? Nobody knows yet, but one must wait for more development as well as the maturation of the console.
Wii fanboys can suck my dick if you dont like my shiet
Why can't people write in English properly? It's almost as if they don't have any respect for their own language. You guys don’t need to buy a ‘Wii’, go buy a book instead -- it’s a lot cheaper and you may actually learn a few tricks.
This 12 yr. old single-handedly made this article worth reading. Sounds like someone might be struggling through their first menstruation. (I assume you to be a female as you lack the balls to even write out the word FUCK -- I take it mommy was supervising internet time?)
for me, the Wii is the only true NEXT-GEN CONSOLE. why? because it offers a new way to play games. what's new to Ps3 or Xbox 360? upgraded graphics? if you don't want NEXT gen console, then stick to your OLD FASHION way of gaming "playing witht the buttons."
yeah graphics are important but do you really think all the people are looking on to this? Look at the gameboy systems. They sold millions of system without even having a good graphics.
also look at the DS. it sold more units than the Psp even though it doesn't have that same level of graphics with Psp.
well the main reason why i'm buying a Wii is that i want to try the new style of gaming which is "Playing just like you're in the game."
another reason is that you don't have to pay for the optional "like Blueray" just to play the Wii. what i'm seeing with Sony is that they're abusing their fanboys to buy something that they don't really need through Ps3.
last thing, i don't decide wether to buy a Wii based on it's name.
Yeah, so I guess I'll pitch in my point of view.
5. I realise this isn't a big problem for you, but to be honest it shouldn't be a problem at all, 'tis just a name in the end, and one with more personality than PS3 or Xbox360
4. I've gotta say, if the console has "some of the best if not the best games of that generation on them," that's good enough for me. Although I must admit the relatively low sales of the GC did have a negative impact of the range of games available, but I am optimistic that the same thing will not happen to the Wii.
3. Graphics matter, 'tis true, but the Wii will have better graphics than any console I have owned in the past, and that alone is good enough to me. That's just my opinion of course, different people look for different things in a game.
2. This is a damn good point. I too have worried that playing the Wii will not be as relaxing as I'm used to. Still, one must remember that games on the Wii are not all about motion-sensitivity, and I recently read that a Nintendo official hinted at the use of Gamecube or "Classic" controllers being usen in Smash Bros. Brawl. Throw in Virtual Console games and backward compatibility and I think if I need to relax rather than wave my Wiimote around, I'll still be able to do that with the Wii, whereas if I want to be more involved in my game, the other 2 consoles are unlikely to have anything like the ability of the Wii.
1. Firstly your point about "kiddy" games. It is true that I may at times feel embarrassed to admit I still own some recent Pokemon games, but that doesn't mean all Nintendo games are for kids. Even now we are seeing plenty of games for the older generation, Red Steel for example, and in any case I am usually able to enjoy childish games as long as the gameplay is good. Please note that there are Spongebob Squarepants games on all current-gen consoles (I believe). You have a good point about a lack of RPGs, I will certainly miss FFXIII, but there are a few RPGs already confirmed, and I am sure that more will come.
So, in short I will be buying a Wii, but there are of course reasons not too, and no way am I going to bash you for not buying one like some of these guys below.
Most of the points you make lack any sort of intelligent thought put into them.
5. Sorry but only immature 12 yr olds are going to sway from something because of a name. The joke is also 5 months old and basically dead...apparently you haven't gotten over that fact. Also to point out...people rarely say "lets go play with my PS2." Generally, when talking about playing games, you mention the name of the game specifically, like "lets go play super smash bros."
4. Sure everyone hates fanboys..but there are fanboys for every system and that's not going to change. If you count the sheer numbers, you'll find out that Sony has even more fanboys...why? because they sold the most systems last generation. It's simple statistics. If you don't want to buy a system because of fanboys, I suggest you stop playing video games.
3. You mention twilight princess, which in fact is a GAMECUBE game that's ported onto the Wii to use the controls. Please do some research before making comments. Also, you talk about a PS2 game and go on to claim the Wii won't be able to do that, when in fact it's been obviously stated that the Wii's hardware, although not up to par with 360 and PS3, will at least be more powerful than the previous generation. You seem to have this idea that the Wii will have N64 type graphics, which it won't. Again, please put more research and thought into your posts next time.
2. I'm sorry to hear that you are lazy. Frankly, I'm getting bored of pushing buttons. If I want to be lazy and relax, I watch TV or a movie. I play video games to have fun. I believe you've heard of a game called DDR? I'd say it was one of the most widely played video games at one point.
1. There are so many contradictions in this point it's not even worth discussing. You would get a D- for a grade in this section in a 5th grade paper.
And your final comments about how you're not serious regarding your points and the main reason you're not getting a Wii is cause it doesn't have any games you want. Fine...too bad you should have moved that paragraph to the top of the article and left out the rest of it. If you don't care for any of the games, you don't want the system. Simple enough...I can live with that.....but why go through the trouble of posting 5 badly thought out points just to fill space and end up saying that you're not truly serious about any of them and you only care about the games?
Please, spare us all and find a new hobbie/career/job/whatever. This writing thing isn't working out fo ryou
Maybe if you played it you would know it is one of the most complex and best fighting games out there
Big deal, Nintendo has fanboys...how does that stop YOU from enjoying a game on a Nintendo system?
You sound like the Anne Coltour of gaming with this article, just trying to go against the grain and say something to get a few hits...
And it's not even about if I agree with you or not, it's just the fact that your arguments mean nothing. The name of the system has no effect on it, the graphics are better than the game you used in your example (FFX) and yeah, the remote is a rectangle, but that's about as far as it goes for similarities with the NES controller. AS you can see in the picture you posted it has a nice contour on the backside that I'm going to assume makes it quite a bit more comfy than holding a piece of hard plastic with pointy edges.
I came to read this article hoping for some solid points, but this is just dumb.
5. You don't buy a console beacause of his name. Only retards are afraid of the reaction of their friends when they say: Wii.
4.So you don't want a Wii beacause of Nintendo only paying attention to their fanboys? Says a Sony-fanboy.
3. Gaming isn't about graphics, it's about gameplay. It's no freaking movie, it's a game and you're supposed to have fun, beacuse of its gameplay and not the graphics.
2. If motion-sensing is that bad, tell me why Sony stole it?
1. Yep, Nintendo's games are crap. NO WAY. Nintendo is about games, and I couldn't see Sony develop MARIO, or ZELDA. PLaystation games are so great though. NOT, it's like: shooters, racing, shooters, shooters, shooters, sports.
5. You don't buy a console beacause of his name. Only retards are afraid of the reaction of their friends when they say: Wii.

Point #5: Are you going to diss a system just because of its name? That is pathetic. Although Wii may be used as a kiddy word in USA does not mean it WILL be interpreted as it, nor is it childish in OTHER countries. The fact that you even menion this is disturbing.
Point #4: Don't diss a system because of the one who did it. You are no better than the fanboys. Give the system a chance - see how it goes and decide based on THAT whether or not to buy it.
Point #3: Here we go again. Graphics. You are wrong. The Wii can certainly show expressions on faces if the DEVELOPERS choose to. Again, it's not Nintendo's fault, and I agree with you that this is important. The PS3 and XBOX360 does NOT have an advantage in such things.
Point #2: Did you even try it? Humans can adapt. You could probably play it in your bed and not get tired of swinging it at all. You're just pessimistic.
Point #1: Wait and see! If there are appealing games, then go for it. Otherwise, don't. Simple. But don't judge it because the lack of good launch titles. I agree that Zelda is not an RPG and I agree that the only good launch game is Zelda. Still, I will get a Wii.
Sincerely,
S. Miyamoto
Still, I find myself lusting after a Wii, something I have never done with a previous Nintendo system since I've been old enough to buy one.
One last comment: I think you should write a "Why I Won't Buy a PS3" atricle. I think you will find the point to be made in that are much stronger than why not to buy a Wii.
Anyway, I enjoyed your artile because your take ont he situation is much different than mine although we reached the same conclusion. However, I think you should wait to play the games before writing off the system.
No 4: I can agree there. Fanboys are quite annoying (even though I admit to being one) and just don't learn to shut up.
No 3: Now this one cheesed me off... I think TP has quite an atmosphere for a game in 480p. The videos show some sublime scenes. And you past it off as "nothing spectacular". TP definately compares with some next gen games and really shows what our current hardware can do.
How can you compare a PS2 game scenario (FFX) to the Wii and then calls its graphics inferiour?? We all know the Wii is a souped up GC but you think it can't do FFX?? Idiot. If graphics are that important, mention how you have a 48" HDTV or something like that with a 360 and then your argument there might mean something.
No 2: You haven't tried it I guess? Neither I. But when I watch people playing it on videos, they don't seem to acting like sugar-rushed 12 year old running on the ceiling. Damn, if you're gonna knock it, at least try it out first before making up your own ideas!!
No 1: I can see where you're coming from but I have faith in the companies actually making these new RPGs to not mess them up. The only thing to wait for is some real support for some true RPGs. If anything, the pointer could make things a little easier when doing all that turn based stuff.
Next time, do some proper research before destroying the image of your site.
Graphics, although they add a certain visual quality to a game, by no means adds immersion. Immersion is the game play itself, can it pull you into the virtual world that the creator intended? Halo, although the graphics were ahead of its time when the game was released, they will pale in comparison to games being released on ANY of these upcoming consoles. Your point on graphics doesn't hold water, its the game itself that immerses you in the experience. Graphics is only a small part of a great game. We have all bought games where the graphics are nothing short of epic, but the game sucks. I wish people would realize this more.
I applaud Nintendo for the Wii, not because I'm a fanboy. Because they have decided to stick to the core values of game play. Because they aren't making me pay for things I don't need in a console only to have bragging rights that in the end mean nothing to me.
I feel that your article is somewhat like putting the cart before the horse. Let wait until all systems are launched with games to play before deciding whether to buy or not.
I am a XBOX 360 owner since a few months after launch. I feel that despite the system being very "powerful", its not been very impressive as a whole when I look at it. Looking at the new systems coming out, I feel the same as I did with last generation of game consoles. I felt that the last generation was fairly mixed (even) as far as games that I wanted to play. I owned all three systems at one point or another and feel that the "kiddie" tag that Nintendo has garnered is a little undeserved. The Gamecube had its fair share of "adult" games like "Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil 4 (which was the best version in my opinion) and other "adult" games that were also ported to the other game systems. I DO feel that Nintendo releasing the system in purple was a mistake and may of fostered the "kiddie" image. As far as the name Wii; if I hear any adult that is not talking to their kid use the word "wee", lets just say I wont feel comfortable playing with them. Its funny that people have become fixated on the name, its almost like in trying to find fault with a system that has not been even released yet, they are picking on it just to have something negative to write about. Let me suggest something; lets stop talking about the name and more about the games when they come out. Remember when Playstation was announced? It was laughed at too. When you think about the name "playstation", it does sound kind of dumb. But you know what? Does it really matter now? Nope. It’s the games that count. (P.S. Now if Nintendo, Sony or Microsoft names their next systems Uranus, then I will laugh.)
As far as the amount of “kiddie” games, again I believe that is a perception that people have perpetuated and have become a battle cry in the gaming community. Let see if the system has games that YOU want to play. Don’t listen to other people and what they think. Make up your own mind.
I refuse to talk to talk about what consoles I will buy or wont until I see some games. In my hand. For me, the selling point for the 360 was Ghost Recon. I might buy a Wii or PS3, but it will depend on the games, NOT the name or history of how the last system did.
That’s my 2 cents.
Why i will buy wii?
If you got a N64 with games like MarioParty marioKart 007 perfectdark Turok Super smash.
and after this have buyed a Gamecube and play marioparty smash Mkdoubledash timesplitters etc... and have 3 friends to play with you. this is the best experience i have with games in the last eight years. because this im a Nintendofanboy with 28 years. I play Rpgs too FinalFantasy DragonQuest, games like Tekken and GrandTurismo but i feel the that the moments with my friends and a nintendo console are greatest.
I think if you have friends to play with you any videogame are better than a nintendo. plus the new advantage of wiimote and internet Wii will be the best choice.
tks
sorry my english!
Your opinion about the wii's name is similarily as childish as as your comment about urine. However you bring up a good point about the graphics, but i've always felt that immersion comes from the quality of the artist as opposed to the power of the engine.
Nintendo have been working on the wiimote for a long time now, any issues to do with aches and pains due to waving the remote around like a mad man are very likely to have been dealt with. I can't imagine it being any more painful than a special bonding session with your hand.
Reading your last point, I'm starting to wonder why you wrote the article in the first place. It seems that you had nothing better to do, and felt like stirring the shit, in an attempt to get some laughable responses from random nintendo fanboys.
