Why I'm Buying a Wii

Posted on October 1, 2006 by

In contrast to Kevin's Five Reasons I'm Not Buying a Wii, this article will explore all the reasons why I will be there, 11:59 on December 7th jumping about readying for my first midnight launch. Disclaimer; just so the whole Sony crowd don't threaten to rape my cat, this article is 100% NOT written by a Nintendo fanboy. The Wii will be my first Nintendo console, excluding my (late) GBC and GBA.

Wii. Hilarious, don't you think? It's probably a stupid-sounding name, but in all honesty no-one mature enough really cares. If you take a second to think outside the box, Playstation, Dreamcast, Game Boy... we're as used to those names as the backs of our hands, but to someone who's never heard of them before, would they really sound so normal? Wii's new, it's innovative, it's different. Change, as strange as it is, takes getting used to - but people always do in the end.

Gameboy. Sounds a bit like a toy intended for kids, but it still worked.
Gameboy. Sounds a bit like a toy intended for kids, but it still worked.

Perhaps for some it's not a question of "What's so amazing I'll want this come launch?", perhaps it's more "I want a next-gen console. Which is the best option for me?" And to be quite honest, the asnwer to EVERYONE isn't "Nintendo Wii!". Take Kevin for example - he'd prefer to opt for something else as the Wii just doesn't tickle his pickle. But this article isn't about anyone else - screw Kevin. I'm sure you're all much more interested in hearing all about me, right?

So why do I think the Wii is the "best option" in my case? The main factor, I must admit, is the price. £180, includes controller, nun-chuck attachment, and Wii sports packed in? Hell yeah. I can honestly say I've forgotten how much Microsoft want for their 360, and with the PS3 nearing half a grand for their decent model - needless to say the Wii is practically my only option, save for waiting ages and begging for a 360 price drop.

You've just got to love Sony. I'd rather a new jet ski, personal jet, or something.
You've just got to love Sony. I'd rather a new jet ski, personal jet, or something.

But looking past the obvious selling points of the Wii (Come on, you all know about the Wiimote, Nintendo's rep for great first party games, graphics surpassing those of current gen consoles, the look, the size, and so on.) I want to explore the less talked about pros of the console.

First of all - how many people who don't scour the internet for all the latest on all the latest consoles, do nothing but talk about them with friends and so on (not unlike myself) - how many have even heard of all the different 'channels', functions, etc.? I explain them all in more detail here. If you've bothered to read that article, I'm sure you're at least a bit excited. Image manipulation, internet, news and weather... at the touch of a button on a home games console? That's new. That's exciting.

Now OK, if you have the money, the Xbox or maybe even the PS3 would be a more powerful, visually appealing, classier alternative to the Wii. But... surely the same old thing, just beefed up a bit is getting tired? I've owned a Playstation and a PS2, and I'm already getting tired of simply buying a new console so I can play the same sort of games, simply looking a bit prettier.

Oh sure, it's beatiful - but it's oh so dragged out and repetitive
Oh sure, it's beatiful - but it's oh so dragged out and repetitive

I can race a more realistic looking car, or kill someone more realistically, or watch tears relistically roll down someone's face - but what's the point? I want a Wii, because to be honest, I need change. I need something new, something innovative. Something that's fun again. Something that isn't another beefed up PS2 or Xbox, or just a souped up Gamecube. More power sure, but something new, too. Something new, like the Wiimote.

Here's the third grader comment. "All my friends are getting one (mum)!" - but it's not such a stupid reason to purchase a Wii in place of a 360 or PS3. Think about it; a big part of the fun of owning a console is talking to your friends about it, swapping games (yet another nail in the PS3's coffin - it aint possible) and playing multiplayer games with a group of pals.

How's about a little multi-coloured, multi-player fun?
How's about a little multi-coloured, multi-player fun?

I know one person who has an XBox 360, and possibly one or two that are thinking of getting one - although it didn't take long to persuade one of them to give the Wii a serious thought. As for the Wii, I know at least 5 or 6 close friends that'll get one on, or near the launch date. Five or Six people to discuss it with, swap games, and muck around on multiplayer mode, instead of all piling into someone's house and having a go one or two at a time on their 360 or god help whoever's stupid enough, their PS3.

And although ealier on I claimed to avoid all the obvious points, it's criminal to not even mention the games as a reason to buy a console. I'm sorry, but no hi-tech super duper motion detector controller is going to get me to buy a console that has no or few good games. But of course, this is far from true of the Wii. Just to mention a few confirmed titles for Nintendo's new system - Red Steel, Call of Duty Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Virtual Console list, as well as the most important games to us here at RPGSite, RPGs like Fire Emblem, Crystal Chronicles, Twilight Princess, and more as the console matures. A shortage of games does really look doubtful.

Twilight Princess, possibly the most anticipated game of the year.
Twilight Princess, possibly the most anticipated game of the year.

Although the extreme Sony fanboys will sacrifice their university fund for a PS3, and the extremist Microsoft fans would die to protect their beloved XBox, I hope this article has at least increased some people's interest in the Nintendo Wii. If it's helped you to make your mind up, it's just the right time - if you want this console for launch or Christmas, you'd do well to preorder it now. But don't forget to check out Alex's Preordering 101 before doing so.

All I can say is, I sure as hell can't wait until December. I already have my preorder in, and you'd do well to get yours pretty soon too.

December, here we come!

Seriously. Why can't people see that every console has good and bad points?

PS3: Expensive, but has the best graphics
360: Breaks a lot, but has a really good action game lineup.
Wii: Underpowered, but cheap and innovative

See, and that's just getting started. I could easily write an entire book on the pros and cons of each system. Buy what you like. If someone likes a different console than you do, that does not make them stupid.

know what i think like what Untitled/Danger said b 4 most ppl that post are morons and cant accept the fact that the console you grew up with is becoming more important and more how you say "popular" then your favourite systems if not like me i favor the wii because i have played it and dont get me wrong the 360 is a good console and so is the Ps3 but they all have downfalls, and good things about them.. for instance the wii has the price and family fun thing to it while Sony/Ps3 have the rpg element and racing and graphics but costs allot of money and no 1 really wants to pay that much unless your rich, xbox is well balanced for most parts thow i dont hear much talk about it other then halo 3, and oblivion (but has already been released for the PC-so not much new there). overall idc but would you ppl come to your senses and stop being whining little babies and grow up!

  4. how i decided on what to get
    I Luv My Wii | May 2, 2007

wii is my first ever nintendo home console, before i was a firm Playstation loyalist i ahd the PS PS2 PSP, PS good, PS2 great, PSP good, Wii excellent the only time before the wii i bought from nintendo was to get the Gameboy colour for pokemon, i was laughing in nintendo's face when they released the Gamecube (they could have thought of a better name and everything to do with it was pretty much the same as Sonys, once i had played my PSP for a while i decided that sony realy ought to do something new, then i heard of the PS3 i had set my sights on it, i ran home and searched for it on the web and it was the same as the ps2, the games, the design, the menu system was the same as psp, it was pointless, i love good graphics but there is no way i would stick my self with a £425 bill and a console iv already basically got, then my m8 mentioned the revolution (Wii), i was interesrted but i thought of the remote as being this huge tv remote, then more info came out and i had decided which next gen console to get.

by the way for MS fans i have never personally like the xbox when i find the PC better so that never came into it, nothing personal :)

wii is one of the most inovative consoles rleased to date, i agree with the fact that the ps3 is just a ps2 with better graphics; i wont even mention what is good about the xbox 360, plus some ignorant moron mentioned the "retard" comment which is as far from the truth as possible, i have had the wii since the release date in europe of december 8th, and the only game i have played that has made me physically tired is boxing on wii sports, plus even wii sports (probably the most active game released) who barely have to move your arms at all, in all FPS an RPG's there is barely any movement involved, a simple flick of the wrist. sony's ps3 on the other hand, you have to move your hands at the equilivant force of a force nine earthqauke to make a slight movement. i have also been able to play the ps3 and the only good pount i am able to make is that resistance fall of man is excellent online, i suppose the video watching is a godd idea, but who in there right mid would use there whole TV to listen to music??( sony there is a thing called a mp3)

wii has useful features such as instant news and weather forecast. the FPS and RPG's on wii maybe just follow on's but they are completely diffrent to the previous generaton's version, were as ps3's are exactley the same but with better graphics.

tosimply show how much sony steal money out of people, is that the PSP is the same rice as the wii and the only thing the wii doesnt have that the PSP has is the music and video player, the video player could again be sometimes useful but the music player is pointless, everyperson i have met has got a modern mobile phone which plays music and makes call and plays games, and is a lot smaller.

Man, some people who post on these boards are just morons. So many people are so pig headed and stubborn to admit that the wii will be an amazing system. One dick head says that waving your hands like a "retard" will get boring fast. i wont mention how non-pc that statement is but i will say how idiotic it is... Using the wiimote will draw people in to the game and make a person feel part of the game. You may get physically tired... But you'll wanna pick it back up and keep at it. I cant even count how many ps2 and xbox games... And yes gamecube games that got so boring fast. Games like gta are cool at first but even any of your aformentioned "retards" can realize that it gets so repetitive and does nothing to keep you interested. The wii will bring people in and keep them in. Afterall.... What is the reason to play video games? To play something that just looks good? Or to play something that draws you in and keeps you coming back? Why was the nes so great? Because the games were exceptionally fun to play.

I'm 27 and have pre-ordered the Wii. If the name offends you, I feel sorry for you. Your obviously still at that age where nicknames make you cry boo hoo.
I have a PC for hardcore sims and beautiful graphics, a nintendo console for fun. I will never fund microsoft, they stole and ruined halo. They pay companies to remove next-gen effects from the pc version of games cos they know their console isn't that next gen (FIFA on PC not even grass on the pitch!) Just cause on pc HDR removed + other effects just to boost 360 sales.
As for the PS3..... I don't have a spare kidney for sale.

Playing games by waving my arms around like a retard simply doesn't do it for me, much less justify a buy. Besides, I believe that kinda gameplay will get old pretty quickly. Oh, and I'm not trying to convince anyone by saying that. It's just a very personal opinion.

I just read the '5 reasons I'm not buying an Wii' article, and most of the comments there are pathetic, but here it's even worse.
Jay, don't fuck MS and Sony, fuck you. I agree that Nintendo is cool, but Microsoft and Sony's conloles are good too. I'm not getting them, but that doesn't mean I have the right to bash all of Nintendo's compettetors heads in.

Listen, I'm a Nintendo ''fanboy'', but that doesn't change my opinion. I just wanted to give you some tips, when you want people to actually feel the same way you do, it only makes it worse if you have to bash the other consoles to do it. If all that talk had gone to more pros for the Wii, this article would definitely be better.

I'm getting the Wii at launch too btw. ^^

First and foremost FUCK SONY AND FUCK MICROSOFT!! What they have to offer is a sack o shit but this time it's been tied round the middle to make it look a little prettier! Who wants to spend all that money on old rope??!! Ya know, been there done that, oh wait, the wiimote, an extensive back catalogue of classics spannin back over 20 years, got that Sony? Got that Microsoft? Err no!! Got fresh ideas? Got new innovation?? Do you have anythin new to bring to the table?? "we got pretty pictures" *Bill Gates* Well take your pretty pictures and ram em up your ass ya 4 eyed fuck wit! Us consumers want new, want challenge, want differential, not oohh another GTA or mindless racing shit.
I wanna stand there and play Tennis,Golf,Boxing and Football in a new way. I wanna shoot arrows and hear them leave my hand and land on my TV. I don't wanna be ripped off by BluGay shit or HDTV which ain't even gonna be mainstream and affordable to the public till the next, next gen of console, so save it. WE DON'T WANT IT!! If i want to listen to MP3's i have my MP3 player SAVE IT! If i wanna watch DVD's i have a DVD player, SAVE IT!! Don't give me shit i already have and expect me to pay stupid prices for a souped up sack o shit I DON'T WANT IT!! Just for the record i own a GB, GBC, GBASP, DS, NES, SNES, 64 and last but not least GC.
I played when we were at war with Sega, who won?! Remember the NeoGeo?? Overpriced piece of shit with pretty pictures which noone bought due to the skankin robbin price tag, hmmm where have i heard that one before?!! The only reason Sony have delayed there launch is so they can rob the wiimote technology and put together a couple of shoddy launch day titles and try and run with Nintendo's ball, or should i say flick slash and swipe, the swipin they should be good at, they done enough of it in the past!! In closin theres no point in bitchin over whos gonna win the next gen war as only time will tell, but heres a hint......*The judge is holding a pair of Red and White ribbons!!* Peace

in bashing the console he was making a legitimate point. who really does get a bunch of friends over for a ps/2 game? aside from a fighter where you can swap people in and out quickly, you really have nothing multiplyer to work with. atleast with halo theres 4 players ^^

  25. Wii 4 me
    Adrian G | October 2, 2006

I'm a Nintendo loyalist. I simply cannot turn down their games. And one of my main reasons for picking the Wii above the 360 and PS3 is just that. If the PS2 and Xbox taught me anything, it's that Microsoft will sell you the same game 20 times with different titles. And Sony just ships in one-off games by the busload, so if you try to comment on one, everyone who owns a PS2 has either forgotten about it, or never even HEARD of it in the first place!
I'll stick with Nintendo, because I know I can count on them. They may not release all that many games, but their ratio of good-bad is certainly higher than their competitors.

  26. MUAHAHAHA
    Scotts | October 2, 2006

Uhh well, PS3 did steal some ideas from Nintendom with the wireless remote, and it costs loads in Australia the decent one will cost $999, they cant justify that, Sony is crazy, but i hate xbox more, its all like Oh wow! lets rave and shoot things at night time oooh real fun >.>
Microsoft is like HEY! lets use one idea, and sell 50 games of it!, the only good xbox games u can get on the computer AKA Halo + Fable

  27. Not a NINTENDO fanboy but...
    Up&Down | October 2, 2006

this guy is obviosly a PS3 hater:"Five or Six people to discuss it with, swap games, and muck around on multiplayer mode, instead of all piling into someone's house and having a go one or two at a time on their 360 or god help whoever's stupid enough, their PS3."
Just a tip: next time you write an article like this, dont bash other consoles.

Wii is designed to a group of people, friends family etc. Wii is a great idea, cheap and eficient.
